American artist Wayne Thiebaud endeared the hundreds gathered to hear him speak about his art at the special “Conversation with the Artist” event and exhibition opening reception on Saturday, March 29, 2008. Eager guests relished the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to ask the artist questions ranging from elementary art education to his place in the modern art period.
Dr. Campbell Gray, director of the Brigham Young University Museum of Art and moderator for the conversation, touched upon the artist’s initial popularity: "From Thiebaud's first one-person show in New York City in 1962, his still-life paintings of food rapidly established his reputation as an artist." The artist, now 87 years old, has never stopped painting, and has progressed to various subjects, such as city and beachscapes, which are included in the show.
Thiebaud explained "Some artists stick to one thing. I didn't want to get bored doing something I already knew how to do."
His advice to all in attendance was “Do something you love and know and feel strongly about and then do your best."
“Wayne Thiebaud: 70 Years of Painting” will be on display through July 27, 2008. Click here for more information.
